Key facts

  • A kei truck is a small 4x4 with an enclosed cab: a 1999–2001 Suzuki Carry is about 4 ft 10 in wide, turns in a 4.1 m (13.5 ft) radius and seats two.
  • Its bed is about 6 ft 4 in by 4 ft 7 in, with fold-down sides, and is rated for 350 kg (about 770 lb): feeder parts, corn and a cooler in one trip.
  • Texas requires mini vehicles to be titled, and registered before they are driven on public roads, so an unregistered truck goes to the lease on a trailer.
  • TPWD allows hunting from a motor vehicle within the boundaries of private property, but not from a public road or its right-of-way, and not with a light shined on game.
  • The 2026–27 general white-tailed deer season opens Saturday, November 7, 2026; archery season runs October 3 to November 6.

Why kei trucks work on Texas deer leases

More than 95% of the land in Texas is privately owned or managed, according to TPWD, and landowners can require and charge for a hunting lease. So most Texas deer hunters spend the season on ranch roads, senderos and two-tracks between camp, feeders and blinds: slow, short-distance driving where a small truck makes sense.

A kei truck is a Japanese mini truck built to Japan's kei class rules: a 660cc engine, a body no wider than 1.48 m (about 4 ft 10 in) and a 350 kg load rating. We import over 300 a year directly from Japan and sell them from our lot in east Houston. On a lease, four things set them apart:

  • A small footprint. A 1999–2001 Suzuki Carry is 1,475 mm (58 in) wide and 3,395 mm (11 ft 2 in) long, with a 4.1 m (13.5 ft) minimum turning radius, so it fits narrow lanes through the brush and turns around on a two-track.
  • An enclosed cab. Doors and glass keep rain, wind and dust off you and your gear, and many trucks have factory A/C for warm early-season afternoons. Our listings show A/C under Features when a truck has it.
  • Low gearing. 4x4 kei trucks have part-time or full-time four-wheel drive, and many add a low range or an extra-low first gear for steep, slick ground.
  • A low, open bed. The sides and tailgate fold down, so you can load from three sides; Honda quoted a bed floor just 660 mm (26 in) off the ground for its 1999 Acty.

What fits in the bed: feeders, corn and blinds

Japan's rules cap every kei truck at 350 kg (about 770 lb) of load. Bed sizes vary a little by model and year; these figures are from Suzuki's catalog for the 1999–2001 Carry (DA52T 2WD and DB52T 4x4).

1999–2001 Suzuki Carry Figure At camp
Bed, inside 6 ft 4 in × 4 ft 7.5 in, 11.4 in sides (1,940 × 1,410 × 290 mm) A feeder barrel, a pop-up blind and sacks of corn
Maximum load 350 kg (about 770 lb) Fifteen 50-lb sacks come to 750 lb
Overall width 1,475 mm (58 in) Narrow senderos and gates
Ground clearance 145–160 mm (about 5.7–6.3 in), by version Go slowly over stumps and deep ruts
Vehicle weight 670–740 kg (about 1,480–1,630 lb), by version What a trailer carries before you load the bed
Fuel tank 40 L (about 10.6 gal) Keep a gas can at a remote camp
4x4 (DB52T) Part-time, with a high/low transfer Low range for steep banks and mud
  • Corn and protein. If your feed comes in 50-lb sacks, 15 sacks is 750 lb, right at the limit before you add tools or a cooler. Two trips beat one overloaded trip.
  • Feeders and stands. Barrels, lids and spinner units lie flat in the bed. Long tripod legs or ladder-stand sections can ride with the tailgate down on the property; strap everything down.
  • Box blinds. Compare the blind's weight and base with the numbers above. Anything heavier than 770 lb or wider than the bed belongs on a trailer or a tractor.
  • Lease road work. A kei dump truck tips its bed, which helps when you spread gravel on a washed-out road or build a pad under a blind.

4x4, low range and lease roads

Four-wheel-drive systems differ by model; our Hijet vs. Carry vs. Acty vs. Sambar comparison covers each one:

  • Suzuki Carry: part-time with a high/low transfer; some 1999–2001 farm (Nouhan) grades add a diff lock.
  • Daihatsu Hijet: part-time, with extras that vary by grade.
  • Subaru Sambar: part-time with an extra-low (EL) first gear on manuals; full-time on automatics.
  • Honda Acty: “real-time” 4WD that Honda says engages automatically as the road surface changes; the Attack grade adds a diff lock and an ultra-low gear.

With a part-time system, drive in 2WD on pavement and dry, hard roads, and switch to 4WD for mud, sand, wet grass and creek banks. Use low range or the extra-low gear to crawl up or ease down a steep bank at walking pace. If the levers are new to you, try them on a test drive at our lot.

Creek crossings

Texas has banned driving a motor vehicle in the bed of a navigable stream since January 1, 2004. TPWD counts a stream as navigable if it keeps an average width of 30 feet or more from its mouth upstream, and Parks and Wildlife Code Chapter 90 lists a few exceptions. Ask the landowner which crossings you may use.

Parking in dry grass

Texas A&M Forest Service warns that catalytic converters can get hot enough to ignite dry grass under a vehicle, and that dragging chains throw sparks. On a dry lease, park on bare ground or gravel, and keep trailer safety chains off the pavement.

Getting the truck to the lease

TxDMV's April 4, 2024 bulletin (RTB 01-24) says mini vehicles “are required to be titled and must be registered if operated on public roadways,” and Texas Transportation Code §545.429 allows a miniature vehicle on a public highway only once it is registered and titled. Registration also needs liability insurance at the Texas minimum of 30/60/25. Our guide to whether kei trucks are legal in Texas explains the law, and the Texas title and registration guide walks through the paperwork.

Until the plates are on, the truck rides on a trailer. Suzuki lists the 1999–2001 Carry at 670–740 kg (about 1,480–1,630 lb) empty, so make sure your trailer and tow vehicle are rated for the truck plus its load, strap it down at all four corners and set the parking brake.

You can pick the truck up at our lot at 6100 Harvey Wilson Dr, Houston, TX 77020, or we can help arrange an independent carrier to anywhere in the mainland United States; you pay the carrier directly (see our shipping and pickup policy).

Want a truck at camp for the November 7 opener? Start with what is in Houston now: those trucks are on our lot and can be inspected and test driven. Trucks marked In Transit can be reserved; each listing has a shipment tracker, and a truck is usually ready at our lot about 7 days after its ship's Port of Houston ETA. Every vehicle we sell is sold as is.

Texas hunting rules that involve vehicles

TPWD's Outdoor Annual spells these out, and your lease contract can add its own:

  • Hunting from the truck. TPWD lists hunting from a motor vehicle “within the boundaries of private property” as a lawful means. You still need the landowner's consent to hunt at all.
  • Public roads. It is unlawful to hunt on foot or from a vehicle on a public road or its right-of-way, or to shoot on or across a public road.
  • Lights. It is unlawful to hunt with the aid of artificial light of any form that illuminates a game animal, so don't light up deer with headlights, work lights or a spotlight while hunting.
  • Feeders and bait. Baiting game animals is lawful (except wild turkey in the East Zone), but baiting is unlawful on most public property.
  • Hauling the deer. Fill out the tag right after the kill, before the deer is field dressed or moved, so before it goes in the bed. It can then travel to a final destination as long as it is tagged and proof of sex goes with it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you hunt from a kei truck in Texas?

On private land with the landowner's consent, yes: TPWD lists hunting from a motor vehicle within the boundaries of private property as a lawful means. Hunting from a public road or its right-of-way, shooting across a public road and lighting up game are unlawful.

When does deer season open in Texas in 2026?

The general white-tailed deer season opens Saturday, November 7, 2026, and runs to January 3, 2027 in the North Zone and January 17, 2027 in the South Zone. Archery season is October 3 to November 6.

How much can a kei truck carry to a feeder?

Kei trucks are rated for 350 kg, about 770 lb. That is fifteen 50-lb sacks of corn with about 20 lb to spare, so leave room for tools and a cooler, or make two trips.

Do I need to register a kei truck that stays on the lease?

TxDMV says mini vehicles must be titled, and must be registered if they are operated on public roadways. We suggest titling every truck, since the title is your proof of ownership, and registering it if it will ever drive on or cross a public road. Vehicle rules on the lease itself are up to the landowner.

Which kei truck is best for a hunting lease?

For steep, muddy or rough ground, look at a Suzuki Carry 4x4 with low range, a Honda Acty Attack or a manual Subaru Sambar 4x4 with the extra-low gear. A Hijet Jumbo extended cab gives tall hunters more room, and a kei dump truck earns its keep on road and blind-pad work.
