White 2000 Daihatsu Hijet Dump Truck 4x4

Kei Truck Body Styles and Grades Decoded: Jumbo, Dump, Panel Van and More

By Farhad Musazada, owner of Skyline Kei Trucks. Last updated: October 21, 2026. Based on Daihatsu, Honda, Suzuki and Subaru releases and catalogs, and our model buyer's guides; manufacturer pages verified October 2026; grade equipment is from launch-year releases and catalogs (sources at the end). General information; equipment varied by year and order, so go by the listing.

Key facts

  • Grade means trim: In Japan a grade (グレード) is a trim level, such as Honda's SDX or Suzuki's KC: what the truck left the factory with, not its condition now.
  • Three-way bed: 三方開 (sanpō-biraki): the tailgate and both sides fold down. 一方開 (ippō-biraki): only the tailgate opens. Most kei trucks and farm dumps are three-way.
  • Jumbo: Daihatsu added the Jumbo extended cab to the Hijet in 1983: room behind the seats, a shorter bed. It is still sold today.
  • Attack and Nouhan: Honda's Attack and Suzuki's Nouhan (farm) are 4x4 work grades. Attack adds ultra-low and ultra-reverse gears (UL/UR) and a rear diff lock; the 1999-on Nouhan Carry adds a diff-lock switch and work lights.
  • Our titles: Year, make, model, a body word (Jumbo, Dump Truck, Van), then 4x4 or 4x2 and M/T or A/T. Extras such as A/C or a diff lock are in the spec line, not the title.

What do the body-style names on a kei truck listing mean?

Every kei truck we sell started as a 660 cc pickup with a 350 kg (about 770 lb) load rating; the factory, or a coachbuilder working from its special-body list, turned it into a dozen different trucks. If you have not picked a model yet, start with Hijet vs. Carry vs. Acty vs. Sambar; this guide is about the names.

Name What it is
Three-way bed (三方開, sanpō-biraki) Tailgate and both sides fold down. The default on most grades.
One-way bed (一方開, ippō-biraki) Only the tailgate drops. Some base grades and soil dumps.
Jumbo (ジャンボ) Daihatsu's extended cab, 1983 on: room behind the seats, a shorter bed.
Three-way dump (三方開ダンプ) Tipping bed whose sides also fold down. Mulch, feed, gravel, brush.
Rear-gate dump (一方開ダンプ) Fixed sides, wide rear gate; the type rated for dirt and sand.
Kintaro Dump (金太郎ダンプ) Suzuki's low-floor three-way farm dump, cataloged since at least 1991. Daihatsu's is the Low Dump (ローダンプ).
Lift dump (リフトダンプ) The bed rises on a lift, then tips, for high trailers and bins; sold in the US as a scissor-lift or high dump.
Panel van (パネルバン) Truck chassis with a factory box body and sliding side doors.
Deck van (デッキバン) Daihatsu's van-based body with a short open bed behind the cabin, 1989 on.
High-roof van (ハイルーフ) Taller cargo van; Daihatsu's 1981 van line led with it, Subaru had one from 1979.
Refrigerated, insulated, crane, tail lift (冷凍車, 保冷車, クレーン, テールリフト) Coachbuilt bodies from the makers' special-body lists.

On dumps, the sides matter more than the badge. Suzuki's current Carry catalog lists its three-way Kintaro and lift dumps for farm, orchard and landscape work and bars soil from them; the shallow-bed dump (浅底ダンプ), with a wide rear gate, is the one rated for soil and sand. Today's Suzuki dumps lift by an electric-hydraulic pump and tip in about 15 to 20 seconds; Daihatsu's 2014 list offers a PTO (power take-off from the gearbox) on some bodies and an electric motor on others. The load rating stays 350 kg (about 770 lb). See our kei dump trucks and kei vans collections for what is on the lot.

What are the Daihatsu Hijet grades and versions?

Daihatsu's Hijet history page dates the names: the 4WD series and the farm-spec Climber (クライマー) in 1982, the cabin-expanded Jumbo (ジャンボ) in 1983, a Super Diff Lock for the 1986 generation's 4WD, the Deck Van in 1989, and the names Hijet Truck and Hijet Cargo from January 1999. The Jumbo, Daihatsu's page adds, is easy to use day to day and still a popular model, and 1999–2001 Jumbos do come through our lot.

For the 1999-on truck we import (S200P is 2WD, S210P is 4WD), Daihatsu's February 2000 and January 2001 releases give the grades:

  • Special (スペシャル): the base grade, 2WD or 4WD, 5-speed or 3-speed automatic. The Special farm pack (農用パック) was 4WD, 5-speed only. The Climber name was still listed in February 2000.
  • Twin-Cam Special (ツインカムスペシャル): added February 4, 2000, with the twin-cam engine; manual only.
  • Extra (エクストラ): the top grade. From January 16, 2001 it got a large bed work light as standard, and the Extra 4WD got four-leaf rear springs and the Super Diff Lock.
  • Low Dump (ローダンプ) and Panel Van (パネルバン): the factory body versions.

Every standard-bed grade in those tables sits on a three-way bed, and the 4WD is part-time with a high and low range. The releases do not list air conditioning or power steering by grade, so on a Hijet we go by the truck, not the name. Our Hijet buyer's guide covers the earlier S83P and S110P trucks and their Climber Dump and Low Dump names.

What do KU, KA, KC and Nouhan mean on a Suzuki Carry?

Suzuki counts the 1991 truck as the ninth-generation Carry and the 1999 truck as the tenth. The September 1991 catalog for the DC51T (2WD) and DD51T (4WD) lists the KA and KC grades on three-way beds, a one-way-open base truck, the Nouhan Carry KL (農繁キャリイ) and the three-way Kintaro Dump WA. Nouhan (農繁) refers to the busy farming season; it is Suzuki's farm grade and has stayed in the catalog ever since. Gearboxes were a 4-speed, a 5-speed or, on 4WD, a 5-speed with EL, an extra-low gear; the 4WD is part-time with a two-speed high/low transfer.

The January 1999 tenth generation (DA52T 2WD, DB52T 4WD) moved the front wheels ahead of the seats and ran KU, KA, KD and KC, from the basic KU up to the better-equipped KC, plus the Nouhan Carry and a Turbo offered from 1997 to 2000. The 1999 catalog marks power steering and air conditioning as suffix codes on the KA rather than standard equipment, so two Carrys of one grade can differ. On the DB52T the Nouhan adds a switch-operated differential lock and work lights. Codes and years are in our Carry buyer's guide.

Honda Acty: what do STD, SDX, Town and Attack add?

The second-generation Acty truck, on sale May 11, 1988, came in six versions: a 2WD STD on a one-way bed, 2WD STD, SDX and SDX-II on three-way beds, and 4WD SDX and ATTACK. Honda built the Attack for "places that need especially strong drive, such as farm tracks and muddy ground," adding ultra-low and ultra-reverse gears and a rear differential lock coupled directly to the rear driveshaft. The February 23, 1990 release that brought the 660 cc E07A (38 PS, about 37 hp) gives the numbers: a 4-speed with a 7.800 ultra-low (UL) and a 7.588 ultra-reverse (UR), plus the rear diff lock.

The third generation of May 28, 1999 (HA6 2WD, HA7 4WD) kept STD, SDX, TOWN and ATTACK. Electric power steering is standard on all but the STD, the TOWN adds an AM/FM cassette stereo, and air conditioning was a factory option on every grade. Honda calls the Attack "a diff-lock 4WD, useful for farm work"; it now pairs UL and UR with a 5-speed, and Honda's 2009 spec sheet still shows the same ratios. The mid-engine layout and the tracked Crawler are in our Acty buyer's guide.

Subaru Sambar: STD, SDX, Supercharger, Classic, Dias and Akabou

Subaru's 2001 release marking 40 years of the Sambar explains the odd names. On the 1990–1999 KS3 (2WD) and KS4 (4WD) trucks, STD and SDX are the everyday grades, the SDX Supercharger adds the supercharged, fuel-injected engine, and the SDX Classic of 1996–1997 is a retro-styled version. The 4x4 manual adds an extra-low gear marked EL. The 1999–2012 TT1/TT2 truck kept the same grade names and added a dump.

Three names are not grades. Dias is the passenger version (Subaru names the Dias Classic and Dias Wagon Classic), which is why Dias listings sit with our kei vans. The JA Sambar was built for Zen-Noh, the national federation of JA farm cooperatives, and the Akabou Sambar (赤帽) was a dedicated version for the Akabou light-freight cooperative, with uprated engine parts. More in our Sambar buyer's guide.

What about Mitsubishi Minicab versions?

Mitsubishi used letter grades on the 1991–1999 U41T/U42T and the 1999-on U61T/U62T. TU, TS and the V type are the basic work grades, often without power steering or air conditioning. TD is the mid grade, with power steering on later trucks. TL is the top grade: power steering, air conditioning, fabric seats and, on 1999–2004 trucks, a 4-speed automatic. The VX-SE of 1997 adds power steering, bed-rail and gate protectors, a lockable side toolbox and a work lamp. Mighty (マイティ) is the farm grade: reinforced rear suspension, lug tires, an optional limited-slip differential. Body versions were the Raku-yuka dump (楽床ダンプ) and a factory panel van. The 1999-on 4x4 shifts into 4x4-high on the move at up to 80 km/h (50 mph), and manual 4x4s add a low-range lever. More in our Minicab buyer's guide.

How do you read a listing title on our site?

Our titles follow one pattern: year, make, model, a body word if the truck is not a standard bed, then the drive and, where we have confirmed it, the transmission. Real examples: 2001 Daihatsu Hijet Jumbo 4x2 A/T, 2000 Daihatsu Hijet Dump Truck 4x4, 1998 Honda Acty Van 4x2, 2001 Daihatsu Atrai Wagon Turbo. No body word means a standard three-way bed; Wagon is the passenger version of a van. 4x4 is part-time four-wheel drive on a Hijet, Carry, Sambar or Minicab and real-time 4WD on an Acty.

We do not put the Japanese grade in the title, because two trucks of one grade can be equipped differently. The spec line and photos record what is on the truck: air conditioning, power steering, a diff-lock switch, a high/low lever, work lights. If a listing does not say, ask us at (713) 385-9798 and we will go and look. The export certificate that comes with every vehicle (with an English translation) gives the model code, which tells you the generation and the drive:

Model 2WD code 4WD code Years (eligible in 2026)
Daihatsu Hijet S82P / S100P / S200P S83P / S110P / S210P 1990–94 / 1994–99 / 1999–2001
Suzuki Carry DC51T / DA52T DD51T / DB52T 1991–99 / 1999–2001
Honda Acty HA3 / HA6 HA4 / HA7 1990–99 / 1999–2001
Subaru Sambar KS3 / TT1 KS4 / TT2 1990–99 / 1999–2001
Mitsubishi Minicab U41T / U61T U42T / U62T 1991–99 / 1999–2001

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a three-way dump and a regular dump?

A three-way dump (三方開ダンプ) tips and also drops both sides and the tailgate, so you can load from the side and sweep out mulch or feed. A rear-gate dump keeps fixed sides and opens only at the back; on Suzuki's current list that is the type rated for soil and sand. Our photos show the sides, so you can tell which a truck is.

Does Attack or Nouhan mean the truck has a diff lock?

Attack, yes: every Acty Attack since 1988 is 4WD with a rear differential lock and the UL/UR gears. Nouhan depends on the year: the 1999-on DB52T Nouhan Carry has a diff-lock switch and work lights, but Suzuki's 1991 catalog lists no lock for the Nouhan Carry KL, so on a 1991–1998 truck go by the switch in the cab, not the name.

Which grades come with air conditioning and power steering?

There is no rule across the five makers. On the 1999–2001 Acty, power steering is standard on SDX, TOWN and ATTACK and air conditioning was a factory option on every grade. The Minicab TL has both; the TU and TS usually have neither. Suzuki's 1999 catalog marks both as suffix codes on the KA, and Daihatsu's releases do not list either by grade. So our spec line records what is on the truck.
